Since in USA, the network coverage of the UMTS network is already very good you can switch the Samsung Galaxy S8 confidently in the "3G" mode manually. This has the consequence that no network change takes place more automatically.
The advantage is that you are always dialed in a very good network and the Internet speed is good. Compared to the "GSM" network definitely the better alternative and compared to no network probably the best ;-)
To switch the Samsung Galaxy S8 in the network mode "3G only" or "UMTS only" proceed as follows:
1. Open the app menu and then the settings
2. Open "Connections" and then "Mobile Networks"
3. Now you will find the entry "Network Mode" - Select it and check "3G only"
